They started out doing noodles — but no one came. They switched to sushi — and still no one came. Mere days after the Post and Courier awarded them a 3 1/2 starred review, Uni Bar in West Ashley closed their doors for good.
Proprietor Jen Kulick, who ran the sake/sushi bar with her husband Michael, said they just weren’t able to make it work. They’ll go back to solely running Voodoo, their cool tiki bar a couple doors down in the Avondale shopping center, which has never had trouble attracting a crowd with its gourmet tacos and exotic cocktail menu.
The space is still under lease by the folks over at Andolini’s, so let’s hope they’ll put it to good use in the near future.

About time, couldn’t have happened soon enough.
I am sad to see Uni Bar close. We went twice and really liked it, so we returned the other night to find it closed. Ironically, both times I saw many people there, some I knew, and it had a nice neighborhood feel.
Some of the worst noodles I ever had. Good riddance.
Bring back Marie Laveau’s.
Thanks Duffy, we appreciate that.
Sea Shell: If you know anybody that wants to buy a restaurant concept real cheap, let me know- I’ll throw in the sign and all the merchandise.
Samurai: Yeah, genius, that’s why we changed the menu.
Johnny Puke: Still pissed’d that we fired his g/f, he never set foot in the place. You don’t get an opinion.
Hey Mike,
Really sorry to hear that your concept didn’t worked as you wanted. my condolences.
Mike, I may have someone of interest in the space but not of the concept or the signs.
The food at both the new and the old was horrible. The owners are so full of themselfs makes me ill. Not to mention the service. The place looked like the 7th inning of the badnews bears.
I’m saddened to hear of the closing of Uni Bar. I’ve always been fond of the chef and staff I was hooked on the cold peanut noodles.
I hope the owners come up with a new place — I’ll be there.
I’m sorry Uni Bar didn’t work, but I’m still not over the shock of losing Marie Laveaux’s. Charleston so desperately needs good breakfast joints, and as a New Orleans expat, it was a taste of home. Pretty please bring back the ROOSTER!
First of all, for the post by phonies, you should really learn to use spellcheck and grammer check. Most of what you posted was illiterate and ignorant so hopefully no one will pay that much attention. As far as your comment about the place looking like the 7th inning of the bad news bears, if I remember correctly, in the end the bad news bears won. Now, for the best part, the new place is awesome. It is so nice to be able to go into a place and not have to deal with TV’s and pool tables and distractions. It is a great little bar with a wonderfully intimate atmosphere. You can go in and enjoy the company of the people you’re with instead of the current football game or race playing on TV. Kudo’s to the owners.
Yes, bring back the Rooster and the best Bloody Mary’s and Beignets.
Please bring back Marie Laveau’s. Closing it was a BIG mistake !!!!!
